PNUR 157 Foundations of Pharmacology

This course focuses on the practical nurse’s role in medication administration to people of all ages. There is a strong emphasis on dosage calculation and drug classifications. Basic concepts of pathophysiology and nursing implications are presented for medications of the various body systems. Utilizing the nursing process and clinical reasoning to provide safe medication administration with a focus on preventing medication errors is also included.

Outcomes

  1. Utilizing critical thinking and clinical judgement, describe the principles of pharmacology and its application in managing common medical disorders.
  2. Describe action, contraindications, and side effects of common medication classifications utilized to treat common medical disorders across the lifespan.
  3. Utilizing clinical judgement, describe the role of patient teaching as it relates to medication administration.
  4. Describe the PN role in safe medication practices and the PN’s responsibilities as it relates to prevention and reporting of medication errors.
