PNUR 157 Foundations of Pharmacology

This course focuses on the practical nurse’s role in medication administration to people of all ages. There is a strong emphasis on dosage calculation and drug classifications. Basic concepts of pathophysiology and nursing implications are presented for medications of the various body systems. Utilizing the nursing process and clinical reasoning to provide safe medication administration with a focus on preventing medication errors is also included.

Outcomes

  1. Describe the basic principles of pharmacology and its application in managing common medical disorders.
  2. Describe action, contraindications, and side effects of common medication classifications utilized to treat common medical disorders across the lifespan.
  3. Implement appropriate and individualized patient teaching related to medication administration.
  4. Describe safe, evidenced based medication practices and the PN’s role in the prevention and reporting of medication errors.
