PSAD 312 Public Safety Leadership
Presents and analyzes leadership theories, skills, and techniques used in public safety administration. Defines and explains basic concepts of leadership; analyzes personal leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities; and evaluates leadership performance in the current public safety environment. Topics include leadership, leadership theories and styles, leadership roles, leadership performance, individual leadership skills and plans, effective leadership, and future trends.

- Students will demonstrate an understanding of theory and application in the management of organizational culture with an emphasis on leadership and public service.
- Students will understand the importance of collaborative leadership in successful public safety organizations.
- Students will evaluate leadership situations involving conflict resolution and decision making including how effective coaching in a team environment could lead to higher job satisfaction for employees.
- Students will demonstrate the concepts of strategic planning and emergency response to public safety issues.
- Students will recognize ethical issues in public safety and apply a framework to address them.
- Students will analyze effective and ineffective leadership examples in public and private industry.
- Students will create an organizational philosophy for a pre-determined public safety agency. This philosophy will analyze current industry trends, understand the differing views of the generational workforce, and apply principles to foster a cohesive leadership approach to the agency.
